  • There are many causes of heel and arch pain, but a large portion of the time, the pain is due to soft tissue irritation. Specifically the plantar fascia. This structure typically responds well to a level of support, compression and specific exercises. Heel spurs, growth plate inflammation and pulling of the achilles are also common causes of heel pain which can benefit from the therapy provided in the Heelr program.

  • People who do not treat their heel pain will often experience chronic pain through the area, and often will develop problems elsewhere. The reason for this is, they will typically adjust their gait (the way they walk), to keep off the sore spot, which will subsequently put more stress through other areas. Those areas may not manage with this extra load, and become painful. Typically, the longer you leave problems relating to the foot and ankle, the longer it takes to be rid of them. You may also require more invasive/expensive treatment the more chronic and severe the problem becomes.

    Pain can lead to a more sedentary lifestyle. This may lead to not only physical deterioration, but has been shown to have negative effects on mental wellbeing.

  • The program works by supporting and rehabilitating the common areas of the foot that contribute to pain. It includes stretching and strengthening that can be done easily at home, as well as some a ball for massage, compression socks and insoles to support the many structures in the foot.

  • Often heel pain is associated with soft tissue problems. Predominantly the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia consists of type 1 collagen and exhibits tendinopathy traits, including degenerative changes, deterioration of collagen fibres, increased secretion of ground substance proteins, focal areas of fibroblast proliferation and increased vascularity. Mechanotherapy (exercise), is typically very effective at improving pains related to tendinopathic pathology. It is a common therapeutics approach for many common tendon issues such as achilles and patella. Whilst you are progressing your exercises, we provide you with support to put in to shoes, to reduce day-day stresses through the problem areas. We also provide a massage ball, and compression based garments to provide further relief. The program is holistic, aiming to provide short term relief via compression, massage and support; whilst progressively improving the body to provide a long term solution and reduce the risk of recurrence.

  • It is impossible to provide an accurate timeline for each person's improvement. The program is based around a 12 week progression, though many will experience significant improvement well before this. Unfortunately, a select few will need to continue with rehabilitation for longer. People should continue to use the insoles, compression socks and Heelr. massage ball ongoing.

  • This varies greatly depending on the build of each person and the nature of the activity they perform. Typically anywhere from 6-12 months is the lifetime of the insoles. Ideally, by the time you have worn your insoles out, you will not require them at all or as often. It isn’t unusual to use insoles ongoing, and may need to be replaced regularly.

  • Anyone over 140kg's would be better off having clinical input as they will compress the orthotics quickly (and they will have minimal influence). In addition, the exercises are based on the use of their body weight, so if you progress a larger person too quickly, they may injury the tissue.
